Enigma Records was founded by brothers William and Wesley Hein in 1980.

The label focused primarily on punk rock, hard rock, heavy metal and alternative rock styles, but also released techno, jazz and classical music through its subsidiary labels.

In its beginnings and for five years it was distributed by Greenworld Distribution, but with the arrival of Jim Martone, colleague and partner of the Hein brothers in 1984,3 the company ceased to be a division of Greenworld to become a private company and therefore ended the distribution relationship with it.
During 1985 the independent labels JEM Records and Important Records were in charge of the distribution and importation of the company's records.

In 1986 they signed with Capitol/EMI labels, for four years for the distribution of the records.
With the end of the contract in 1989, Enigma was sold to the aforementioned companies with all the catalogs and artists involved.
Enigma's Canadian division closed in 1992 and was reorganized by FRE Records. Finally, the last catalogs were sold to DROG Records, between 1996 and 1999.

During the years of activity, Enigma also maintained several label divisions, the first was Enigma Retro dedicated to the re-releases of catalogs of other labels such as Bizarre Records, Straight Records and DiscReet Records, and Restless Records, dedicated to promote new bands, mainly punk rock. The latter label was sold in 1991 to Capitol/EMI.
Other labels were Restless Retro, Pink Dust Records, Ruff House Records and Synthicide Records.
